Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1940, at the age of twelve Douglas came to live in Florida with his parents when they moved to the United States and established the family’s residence at Fort Myers Beach. Educated at the University of Florida in Gainesville, (the home of the fighting Florida Gators football team) he earned two degrees, a B.A, in Political Science in 1962 and his J.D.in law in 1964.

Doug was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1965 and began his practice of law as an Associate in the Fort Myers law firm of William Lamar Rose. On July 1, 1969 he was appointed to be the Public Defender of the newly created Twentieth Judicial Circuit of Florida, a five county area in southwest Florida, by then Governor Claude R. Kirk Jr. winning continuous election to that office at four year intervals ending his thirty years of public service to the people of southwest Florida on June 30, 1999.

For eight years while serving as Public Defender, Douglas also served on the State Medical Examiners Commission, established within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Medical Examiner’s Commissions’ Duties as provided for in FL Stat Section 406.02 are to: Initiate cooperative policies with any agency of the state or political subdivision thereof. Remove or suspend district medical examiners pursuant to law and have the authority to investigate violations of the MEC Statute. Oversee the distribution of state funds for the medical examiner districts and may make such agreements and contracts, subject to approval of the executive director of the Department of Law Enforcement, as may be necessary to effect the provisions of chapter 406.02.

For two years following his public service Doug worked as the administrative attorney (handling subrogation claims) for the personal injury law firm Associates and Bruce L. Scheiner, in Fort Myers. He retired from the active practice of law in 2001.

Now divorced after thirty-two years of marriage to his second wife, Doug is the father of two adult married children, a son and daughter, and the grandfather of five. At age seventy-three, he now enjoys the freedom to pursue his many personal interests from his home in Lake Wales Florida. His biographical listing as an “Honored Member” in the 16th Edition of Who’s Who Publishers, LLC, 2012 Hardcover Registry, ISSN 2169-060X, appears on page 2020 and in other publications.
